I would have needed to purchase a separate multi channel receiver, DVD player and 5 satellite speakers and subwoofer. The Sony sounded much better in store than similar systems offered by other manufacturer''s and it offered multi channel SACD. The system, correctly set up with the optional wall brackets and speaker stands, is surprisingly good. DTS appears to offer better sound than dolby digital. The subwoofer works really well providing excellent low frequency rumbles and effects. The satellites are well designed and offer sparkling sound on movies.

The sound is impressive and weighty with action films, but still crystal clear enough for dialogue. I know that it could never compete with full-on separate A/V components and speaker packages, but in my room which is approx 4m x 4m i would never have the space for such equipment. So the diddy satelite speakers and sub are just the ticket. DPL 2 is also a great feature for watching standard TV programmes. It's worthwhile getting an S-video - Scart lead (or component cable if you're lucky enough to have a plasma screen) As this is noticeably better than the composite adaptor supplied.

You can save yourself some money too by buying the speaker wall brackets from Currys a deal at only 12.99 per pair in silver. I am in the process of buying this system after readingf the reviews, however I have one question. Bought the Sony dav s 550 recently, from , which is offering good dealsat the moment. Never had DVD before, but the package of good quality, the package looks extremely stylish in my living room and I am a happy customer.
Have you ever seen the difference between composite and RGB/S-Video for a games console? The non-composite picture is orders of magnitude sharper and more vibrant. I've got the switch on the back set to progressive which seems to work fine (it switches back to interlaced automatically for PAL DVD's which is quite annoying).

However if it's definitely the answer then I would rather give it a go than pay someone else to do it. Well that's it, the Sony has been replaced with a Panasonic and not before time. The front left speaker problem eventually drove me mad, Sony did themselves no favours when they made the DAV, it certainly changed my opinion of their brand. The volume needs to be cranked on some DVDs but others are fine, especially those with a DTS track . Take the cover off and extract the circuit board that the speakers connect into, trace where the speaker connections are soldered into the board. I now have a unit with sound through all its speakers, but no way to play DVDs or CDs. I am utterly disappointed with Sony's design effort, to say the least. I'll buy something else and it won't be a Sony. I have the Sony DAV-s500 and it was great!
I expect this option will be another revelation. There are few negatives with this system, bearing in mind the cost and size of the components. On some early movies and the occasional cd, I''ve noticed a slight lack of gain - I''ve had to increase the volume to maximum to achieve sufficient listening levels. This should not be an issue in small to mid size rooms. The claimed 40 watts per satellite is probably optimistic.
No such problem with the 550 the dialogue is much clearer and all of the surround sound affects (both 5.1 & DTS) effects are much better. Ok OK - I admit that My subwoofer was positioned too close to the TV it seems, and I have moved this away now, towards the back of the room. Yes, I had the sub level turned up to +6 from day 1, and by moving the sub, and the centre speaker to the middle of the room the sound has improved by 200% whilst watching DVD's. Still not quite the bass I would of liked, but not bad, at about 20 volume plus.
I have connected it in accordance with the instructions i.e. digibox into Video 2 input and output to the TV via the yellow 'monitor out' into the TV S-Video socket. The DVD player works with surround sound from the S550 when the TV is selected to Ext 3 but there is no sound from the S550 when selected to the normal TV channel for satellite. The TV has 3 scart inputs and one S-Video input, and also a 'fixed' input for stereo audio to utilize the TV surround sound. The digibox input is there and the TV has sound, but I can't seem to get it through the S550.
One day after about 5 YRS, not alot of use it died, no power lights or anything. So now I have a Panasonic TV and a Panasonic Cinema surround sound. I think it the Sony should have lasted longer as I paid nearly £500 pounds back then.
